Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained
Queensland runs two licence layers: an occupational licence for the person doing plumbing and drainage work, and a contractor licence for the business taking the work on, with the QBCC issuing both. The occupational licence shows the holder has the skills for the work. The contractor licence shows the business has the financial capacity and training to run jobs.
Plumber's licence
covers plumbing work, apart from jobs needing a separate endorsement.
Drainer's licence
covers drainage work below ground level, with a few exclusions of its own.
Gas work licence
Queensland allows only a licensed gasfitter to do gas work, and an owner can ask to see that licence before anyone starts.

How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland
Oversight is split between two bodies: the QBCC licenses plumbers and registers notifiable work, and the local council issues permits and inspects. Regulated work falls into permit work, notifiable work and minor work, and a licensed plumber or drainer must do all three. The QBCC says that rule protects your home, your health and your rights.
The paperwork you receive:
- Form 4: after notifiable work, you or whoever engaged us receives a copy, and an address search on the QBCC's online registers shows whether one was lodged.
- Gas system compliance certificate: once gas work on a new installation or alteration is finished, the licensed gasfitter hands it over straight away and sends a copy to the gas network operator within 5 days.
An owner can ask the council to inspect notifiable work at any stage. If no Form 4 arrives, you can ask the QBCC for a copy or lodge a complaint online.

Licence and Warranty Questions
Call (07) 3523 6484What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?
A plumber's licence covers the pipework and fixtures at your place, and a drainer's licence covers the drains below ground. The QBCC issues both, and each leaves out the specialist work that needs its own endorsement. We hold both classes, so one visit can sort the pipes and the drains.
Does plumbing work in Boondall come with a warranty?
Yes, our labour carries a lifetime labour warranty, and our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee backs it (T&Cs apply). If we're late, $100 comes off your bill.
What paperwork do I get after plumbing work in Boondall?
After notifiable work, you receive a copy of the Form 4, which goes to the QBCC. After gas work on a new installation or alteration, the licensed gasfitter gives you a gas system compliance certificate straight away. Keep both with your property records.
Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?
Yes, we take jobs for owner-occupiers, landlords, tenants and unit owners. Who approves the work differs, though: a rental needs the property manager or owner to sign off, and a unit may need body corporate approval before we start.
